Give Yourself Time to Succeed

I continue to remain amazed at how, over time, the principles of success in application have compounded to reward me with great miracles. Here I was in early 1998 with a 3rd class degree in Biology Education from the University of Ilorin and you would have thought it was all over. Nobody gave me a chance, so to speak. But I had a dream to become a leading motivator of men, to propel people toward peak performance. But I knew also that this was not going to happen overnight, it would require some time.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once said that “Lives of great men all remind us that we can make our lives sublime, and departing, leave behind us, footprints on the sands of time.” There is no doubt that the former Managing Director of GTBank, Tayo Aderinokun and Nigeria’s Lady of Songs, Christy Essien Igbokwe, both embody this truth. Both achieved greatness in their respective fields by the sheer impacts of their contributions to our lives. They understood what William James meant about the great use of life to spend it for something that will outlast it.

Seeing the world through a lens

I walked out of his office inspired.  All I could immediately recall were those soft-spoken words” “STAY WITH IT”.  They came from no less a person than Rev. Sam Adeyemi of Success Power fame, on whom I had gone to pay a courtesy call.  The first time we met was two years earlier when he came to my university campus to speak to students on success.  Then I was an undergraduate with a media outfit and most naturally, the privilege fell to me to interview him for a story for my readers.

Each time I look at life, the more I am convinced that there is practically just one key reason people fail to reach their goals – they never take the first steps. It is your first steps towards your goal that will collectively constitute the cornerstone of whatever success you want in life. Dream the finest dreams; plan the biggest plans but without the first steps of action towards them, you will forever remain a sitting duck in life.

The Day That Turned My Life Around

Quite often people ask me, “Ubong, what was that turning point in your life that led to your taking the decision to become a motivator?” I always cast my mind back to that fateful day in January 2008.

Shortly after my final exams at the University of Ilorin, I had returned home to my parents with great joy to declare mission accomplished – I was now a graduate. Then suddenly it dawned on me that I was now on my own. The euphoria gave way to concern and a great feeling of uncertainty enveloped my entire being.

Very often we find ourselves doing things because others are doing them. We join the bandwagon because it seems the right thing given that the majority are in line. We do it because everyone else is doing it. So we are constantly seeking to belong. We don’t want to be left out. Many are in relationships today not because of what they want to become but because they want to belong. To belong is easy but to become is hard. All it takes to belong is to simply tag along with the bunch; to just join the group. To show up is all that’s required. Whereas it takes much more to become. To become, you must be willing to step up a notch. You must create. You must become the maker that the belonging crew will one day seek to be a part of. You must take the path of transformation and this is hard. You have to undergo a process of self enhancement. This is not for the faint of heart. It is the reason why many belong but only few become.
